New seating system best in class in convenience. introductionthis is a great time to be shopping for a new minivan. Ford, toyota and nissan launched all-new models for the 2004 model year and gm and honda are introducing all-new models for 2005. To counter this, chrysler has added more than a dozen new features to its town & country models, including an innovative new seating setup. And the price of entry has been dropped with the addition of two value-priced models. chrysler's new second- and third-row seats fold perfectly flat, flush with the floor, revealing more than 160 cubic feet of cargo space. That's substantially more than what's available in any sport-utility vehicle, including the behemoth chevy suburban. The town & country's seats are quickly and easily folded flat without having to remove the headrests. To accommodate the new seating system, chrysler's engineers redesigned the town & country's underbody and designed a new fuel tank, exhaust system, parking brake cables, and rear climate control lines, and modified the rear suspension. when the seats are in place, they provide comfortable perches for up to seven passengers. Storage bins and cargo nets assist with carrying groceries. The luxurious limited model comes with leather upholstery, upscale appointments, and dual power sliding doors and a power rear liftgate. Gps navigation, dvd entertainment, hands-free communication and other features are available for increased convenience. Two v6 engines are available: a 3. 3-liter v6 comes on base and lx models and produces 180 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. It comes equipped with air conditioning, power windows, tilt steering column, remote keyless entry, am/fm/cassette, and dual sliding doors. Standard upholstery is cloth. The new stow 'n go seats are not included, however, and the second row is a bench seat. Huge taillamps feature clear red lenses and jewel-like reflectors. All but the base model are built on a long wheelbase. power sliding doors on both sides add convenience when moving passengers. Press the button on the remote transmitter twice and the door slides open; press it twice again and it slides closed and seals. From the second-row seat, the power sliding door can be opened and closed by pressing a button; it can also be opened manually. A safety lock switch hidden on the trailing edge of the door can be engaged to prevent a child from opening the sliding door from inside. The power sliding doors can be fussy when passengers are in a hurry to get out, however, and they usually are. Pulling on the outside lever opens the power door manually, with just slightly more effort than opening a regular manual door. some models come with manually operated sliding doors, which are easy to operate, smoothly sliding open and closed with the pull of a nicely designed lever. The outside door handles are comfortable, easy to operate and well designed; they impart a feeling of quality in appearance and operation. All door handles should be this good, but they aren't. a power rear liftgate is available that adds convenience when picking up groceries or supplies. Press a button on the remote control and the liftgate opens or closes automatically. It provides seating for up to seven people, and all positions, including the third row, are roomy and comfortable. That's something that can't be said for any sport-utility vehicle. Cup holders are available at each seat, and the rearmost passengers each get their own storage console, though the plastic lid is flimsy. The material is soft and appears to be durable. Attractive sycamore wood and satin-silver trim warmed the cabin. chrysler's new stow 'n go seating system is the best on the market. The second and third rows of seats fold flat into the floor leaving a perfectly flat platform for cargo. Folding and unfolding the seats is a quick three-step process. Pull one strap to drop the seatback, then pull two other straps to tuck it into the floor. This leaves a perfectly flat platform. Very few seats fold perfectly flat and no one else (except dodge) has a second row that does this. The system is also flexible. The third row is split and either or both of the second-row captain's chairs can be stowed. Once back there, she said the seating was very comfortable. She then put on her headphones and that was the last we heard from her. the low floor makes getting in and out through the side doors easy. Caesar the 160-pound mastiff requires a ramp to get into an suv, but he stepped easily and without hesitation through the rear and side doors of the town & country without such assistance. The low load height also makes loading cargo easier, and the town & country can carry more stuff and bigger items than any suv. There's a fair amount of cargo space behind the third row. When the seats are in place for passengers, there are wells behind the third-row seats that are perfect for groceries. A pair of cargo nets can be hooked onto hook. The luxury of versatility. introductionfor some people, luxury means a deserted beach, a bottle of sunscreen, a new mystery novel, leaving everything behind. For others, luxury means traveling with all the comforts of home. But the town & country does it without the excess weight and bulk. Once in, the town & country delivers better handling than most of those truck-based suvs. And it costs less than most of them. chrysler last redesigned the town & country for 2001, and it remains among the best minivans on the market. The interior is versatile with seats that fold and remove. Powerful v6 engines deliver crisp performance. The ride is smooth and quiet. And it's wrapped in an attractive design. for 2003, chrysler has added standard equipment at most trim levels, an optional power sunroof, and three new option packages for the town & country lx. Power adjustable pedals are expected to be available late in 2003. . lineupmidway through 2002, the chrysler town & country line expanded to five trim levels, with the new high-value el joining the existing lx, ex, lxi, and limited. For 2003, the lxi and limited are offered with either front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive; all el, lx, and ex models are front-wheel drive. all models are built on a long, 119. 3-inch wheelbase, making the town & country among the biggest minivans on the market. the standard engine in the el and lx is a 3. 3-liter overhead-valve v6 producing 180 hp and 210 lb-ft of torque. Chrysler's town & country limited feels like a luxury vehicle that happens to be a minivan. In between, a broad range of models meet varying needs and price ranges. the model lineup can be a little confusing, because the bargain-priced el comes with some standard equipment (such as three-zone climate control) that the $25,165 lx does not. Both come with power windows, heated mirrors, cruise control, tilt steering, seven-passenger seating, multi-stage air bags and abs. Luxurious family hauler upgraded and improved. introductionthe 2011 chrysler town & country features revised styling, a new engine, an upgraded suspension, and a reworked interior. The new engine is a 3. 6-liter v6 with considerably more power. This brings chrysler in line with the fine v6s offered by the competition. Fuel economy remains steady with an epa-estimated 17/25 mpg city/highway. the 2011 town & country sits lower than before and its suspension has been stiffened to make it more controlled. The ride is still quite smooth, and the wallow and float we noted on the previous model is gone. the interior is improved for 2011. While the dashboard is still mostly plastic, so are those in most rivals, including the honda odyssey and toyota sienna. The look is more elegant, the materials are richer, the gauges look better, and there are now soft-touch door tops. town & country's entertainment and seating options are the best in the class, matched only by the dodge grand caravan. Improved stow 'n go seating with better second-row seats is standard. These seats tuck nicely into the floor, and when they're up, the floor bins offer storage space. The rear seats fold into a well behind them, allowing a perfectly flat, voluminous rear storage area. There are also many entertainment choices, including rear tv, two dvd players, a powerful stereo and ipod connectivity. A couple of features have been dropped for 2011, notably flotv and swivel 'n go seating. the town & country is a great vehicle for families that need to haul kids and cargo on a regular basis. It has always offered a lot of interior utility, but the 2011 changes make the environment more pleasant, the handling more controlled, and power and fuel economy better. It also adds rear park assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross path, and a rearview camera. walkaroundthe chrysler town & country is offered in one long-wheelbase body style, and its size is comparable to several competitors. Cargo room is comparable as well. The roof is wide at the top, also contributing to the boxy look. the 2011 styling revisions make it look a little better. Up front, the hood is new, as is the grille and front fascia, which adds a chrome strip above the lower air intakes. The grille is more attractive, taking on a new corporate look that also appears on the chrysler 300 sedan. Along the sides, the town & country gets new chrome moldings and available bright polished 17-inch wheels with a different design and painted pockets. At the rear, the glass has more curvature, and there is a standard roof spoiler that aids aerodynamics. The rear also adds led taillights, a new shape for the fascia, a bright metal step pad, and a chrome trim to strip echo the front end. for 2011, town & country comes with a roof rack with crossbars that stow in place to aid aerodynamics when not in use. interiortown & country's competitive advantage can be found on the inside, where it has many thoughtful features. Thanks to the 2011 update, the quality of the interior is improved as well. hard plastic still makes up much of the dashboard, but that's the case with almost all vehicles in the class. The dash loses its sharper edges and gets nicer graining. It has a more integrated, flowing look due to a more elegant design and the fact that the dash is made of fewer pieces. The door tops are now padded, and the materials have a richer look and feel. the gauges are larger in the 2011 models, and are easy to read. They use black faces with white numbers and chrome trim (replacing the previous aqua blue-lit white faces). The 2011 instrument panel adds a larger trip computer between the tachometer and speedometer. It's a better, more useful design. the radio/entertainment/navigation system is set high on the center of the dash for easy access. With any of the three systems, the controls are easy to use, but those on the right side are a bit of a reach for the driver. The cd/dvd changer is set low, making it a possible distraction to use while driving. The gearshift is easily accessed without taking up room as it is mounted between the radio and instrument panel. all radios come with a 30-gigabyte hard drive to hold music files plus gracenotes music identification. The base radio can hold about 6700 songs, and the two higher-end radios can hold about 4250 songs because some of the space is devoted to navigation map information. The first step-up navigation system is an integrated garmin unit, and the high-end nav system has voice recognition, sirius travel link and sirius traffic. Songs can be ripped from cds, and music and pictures can also be downloaded from thumb drives via a standard usb port. new for 2011 is the steering wheel. It has controls for the trip computer, phone, audio system, cruise control, and, when ordered, navigation system. The trip computer controls are especially welcome because the last model had them inaccessibly placed behind the steering wheel on the left. The wheel now telescopes as well, making it easier to find an ideal seating position. It has a deep storage area, a pair of cupholders and a covered shallow tray. A higher-end version has a tray that can be opened from the rear, allowing parents to pass items back to kids. There are also bottleholders in each front door. front-seat room and comfort are typical for a minivan. The front captain's chairs afford an upright driving position with an suv-like view of the road. There is plenty of head room, and leg room will only be lacking for the tallest drivers. the second row is more comfortable on the 2011 town & country. To allow them to fit into the bins in the floor, the previous seats were notoriously flat, offering little support. For 2011, chrysler added more padding and made the seats taller and wider. They're still not as comfortable as the buckets in most competitors, but the 2011 changes are a welcome improvement. the second-row bucket seats don't slide forward and back, but the back folds forward and the seat tips up to all.
